Adventurer is one of the mainstays of the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race, both on the waters of the Bay and here in the Virtual Race. After sinking on land in Baton Rouge in 1997, Adventurer has been through two complete refits and currently pounds the waters outside of Annapolis, MD. She is captained by Duncan Hood and races regularly in the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race from Baltimore to Norfolk.

Duncan and Adventurer are sailing on behalf of the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race. GCBSR's mission is to promote awareness of the Chesapeake Bay’s heritage; to encourage preservation of the Bay’s resources; to support Chesapeake Bay education and clean-up efforts; to bring historic schooners to the Bay; and to encourage schooner sailing and preservation. Having been a professional sailing captain for over 40 years, Duncan is committed to increasing the public's awareness of the role sailing vessels have made and continue to make to our country's heritage. Participation in the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race is a visible and engaging way to do this. Duncan believes the Virtual Race is a fantastic way for us all to help other Bay nonprofits achieve their goals, while promoting the health and history of the Bay.

Welcome to the 2023 Virtual Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race!

While normal sailboat racing happens on the water, this race is completely online. Each participating schooner has teamed up with a nonprofit partner, and is racing to raise as much money as possible for their charity. YOU can participate in the race by choosing a schooner, making a contribution, and sharing this webpage with your family and friends! 90% of gifts will go directly to the charity of your choice. The other 10% will help the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race achieve its mission to promote awareness of the Chesapeake Bay’s heritage; to encourage preservation of the Bay’s resources; to support Chesapeake Bay education and clean-up efforts; to bring historic schooners to the Bay; and to encourage schooner sailing and preservation.
